I always feel slightly ambivalent about September. On the one hand it means my favourite time of year is coming with autumn and the period from September to December (and it's nice to see the weather cooling down for the moment). On the other I'll always indelibly associate September with going back to school after the summer holidays, and how bloody depressing that was.
It's been a real lull since Ayacon with far too much of me feeling listless. Somehow having a three day weekend last weekend was a bad thing, far too much time to think. However last weekend I did go to see The Hurt Locker (very good, and very nerve-wracking at times) and Broken Embraces (good, but doesn't have the heart of Pedro Almodovar's best films). I think this weekend I will go and see (500) Days of Summer. It might turn out to be far too self-consciously smug or 'quirky' but I'm prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt for now. That, and Zooey Deschanel looks absurdly gorgeous in it.
I'm really looking forward to the new Yo La Tengo album on Monday, there are few band around who've managed to be as consistently good for such a long time.
Right now I'm 400 pages into a 600 page manuscript, checking to see all the requested corrections have been made. Fun! |

| | Set Fire to Flames - Vienna Arcweld/Fucked Gamelan/Rigid Tracking | ] | My sister and my parents are now all on holiday, so it's just my brother and I at home this week. The house is very quiet! I might make use of the free TV in the late evenings and weekends to finally watch Man on Wire and a few other films I've bought recently. I enjoyed watching Anvil last week anyway, even if it was kind of painful viewing at times.
Ayacon was great fun, one of the best times I've had at a convention. There were a few things I could have done better (the usual talking to people stuff) but otherwise it was good to see people again and take time away from work etc. I probably shouldn't have walked all over the bloody place so much though, it became a bit of a running joke, and left me with aching legs for days XD
Went back to work today :(
I feel like having a third shower today at this rate, it's so damn humid. |

| | Super Furry Animals - The Very Best of Neil Diamond | ] | The Iron Giant on DVD for £2 - bargain! One of the few films that leaves me teary-eyed too, and just for being in this (even if it is in a relatively small capacity) I can probably give Vin Diesel a free pass for all the shit films he's made (i.e. every other film he's been in except Pitch Black).
Went to see Coraline today, really enjoyed it and it looked fantastic. Recommended. Can't believe we have to wait until October in the UK to see Up! Madness.

Here is my random top 5 list of the day:
Top 5 people whose voices have me reaching for the mute button:
1. Joey Lauren Adams in Chasing Amy (the scene where she's sobbing her guts out could be used as an instrument of torture) 2. Kristin Chenoweth in anything 3. Catherine Tate in Doctor Who 4. Megan Mullaly in Will & Grace 5. Shirley Henderson in anything
And as a bonus number 6: Christina Aguilera.
I should stop being so mean XD

| | Good Morning Captain - Slint | ] | I think it's time to finally put my scarf and sweaters back into the wardrobe until October, spring seems to have arrived :(
Work was a little frustrating at times today, not least dealing with the world's worst fax machine. It's hard enough faxing anything on it, let alone something to Italy!
Good things coming up: Two weeks until Minami, one week until I have the new Decemberists album.
Bad things coming up: Dentist appointment this week. Argh! |

| | My Bloody Valentine - Lose My Breath | ] | Saw the last ever episode of The Sopranos last night, complete with deliberately infuriating ending. Sad to see the series go, that and Six Feet Under have been the two great TV series for me to watch in the last couple of years. I should probably watch The Wire at some point, I've heard enough rave reviews for it.
Went and bought a load of Seinfeld DVD box sets on the weekend, about time I started watching all of that series too (having a hand in both Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, hail Larry David the genius!). Watched the episode 'The Contest' over the weekend, one of my particular favourites of the ones I've seen already.
And Welcome to the NHK (both the manga and the novel) is one of the most fucked up things I've ever read XD |

The rules are easy, just post 10 things that recently made you happy! Then tag 10 people and force them to post this meme on their LJs. Because it is good. Everyone needs a little happiness once in a while.
1. In Rainbows came out. 2. Having an extremely annoying customer walk out of the shop (probably never to return) after she got into a huff when we told her we no longer take cheques. 3. I saw Ratatouille 4. Arsenal (for the time being) stopped being shit for the first time in about two years. And beat Spurs. 5. Watching my DVDs of Tenchi Muyo. 6. The knowledge that I don't have to be at work for the next two weeks after Friday (I'm doing some work experience at Random House). 7. Walking through Bloomsbury every Friday after going shopping after work 8. Not having to go to a cousin's birthday party, and saving myself six hours of being cooped up in a car 9. I started listening to the band Pavement 10. The weather finally getting cold.
I tag: Natalie, Claire, Nia/Tak, Shelley, Becky/Angelmisha, Caz_chan, James/Snap, Bek-E, Clement, Nicky/Yaminoaeris |

| | Pavement - Rattled by the Rush | ] | Terrific rugby matches over the weekend, this has been a great World Cup thus far.
I've just remembered that Ratatouille is out this weekend (after bloody 4 months or so of waiting after the US release). So suddenly the upcoming weekend looks a lot better, I must go and see it. I've always loved Pixar's stuff to date. I'm tempted to go and see Control sometime too.
And then there's rugby semi-finals and European Championship qualifiers to add to the mix. Sport and cinema makes for better weekends. Then Expo the week after, time to see people again. |

| | Prince - Girls & Boys | ] | Things are really quiet at home this week. My brother is back at university, my sister is away, and my Dad is in Cyprus for the next ten days. So it's just my mother and I at home Two of my cousins have had babies in the last three days - both girls - which makes my ridiculously large family that little bit more complex. It's something like 30 kids from 32 cousins thus far, and since no-one in my family ever stops at one child, it's only going to get worse as time goes on! XD
Have picked up the new PJ Harvey, Mum albums today, as well a Vitalic live album. Seeing Natalie and maybe some other people on Saturday, and on Friday I am going to see Joanna Newsom play at the Royal Albert Hall. Greatly looking forward to that one.
Also last week I bought a Fruits Basket Fan Book produced by Tokyopop, like the hopeless Furuba addict that I am. But no buying it Natalie until you read volume 17 ;) - it's a fun read though. Still doesn't excuse the four month waits between volumes though... |

| | Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position | ] | That new advert on the TV for Dairy Milk, with the gorilla drumming to Phil Collins - completely daft, but best ad on TV for ages! Best since the Volvic Tyrannosaurus Alan ads anyway. Though infinitely more weird.
The Magic Position by Patrick Wolf, file alongside Spitting Venom by Modest Mouse, Declare Independence by Bjork and Intervention by Arcade Fire in best songs of 2007. |

| [ | music |
| | Rilo Kiley - Breakin' Up | ] | Though it's been a decent year for music so far, there's been a load of godawful album covers seemingly. So far I've seen stinkers from Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Bill Callahan, Hard-Fi (with their half-arsed attempt to be innovative by sticking NO COVER ART on the cover)...even the great Super Furry Animals have come up with an eyesore for their new album cover. And that's not to mention still to come releases from Stereophonics, The Hives and James Blunt. The Stereophonics one especially.
Thank god I don't like most of that lot anyway....but when even SFA can't get a decent album cover, you know you're in trouble. |

| | Justice - D.A.N.C.E. | ] | Into the second half of 2007 now, so thought I'd note down my favourite albums of the year so far (some came out in America in 2006 admittedly):
1. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (Modest Mouse) 2. Boys and Girls in America (The Hold Steady) 3. Sound of Silver (LCD Soundsystem) 4. The Crane Wife (The Decemberists) 5. Drums and Guns (Low) 6. Enjoy Eternal Bliss (Yndi Halda) 7. You, You're a History in Rust (Do Make Say Think) 8. Volta (Bjork) 9. Mirrored (Battles) 10. Icky Thump (The White Stripes)
Bubbling under: Charlotte Hatherley, The National, Justice, Arcade Fire, !!!
September is going to be a great month now, The Go! Team and Animal Collective's new albums were good enough - but add to that the new PJ Harvey (greatest female musician ever) record, and it's terrific stuff all the way. |
